Day 1

Day 1

Hello Groves Families!

Welcome to the first post of the 2019/2020 academic year!

The start of a new school year is filled with a lot of mixed emotions. Among them include

  • excitement
  • hope
  • fear
  • anxiety

Whether a freshman or a senior, each year brings with it new possibilities, new challenges, and new anxieties. All of these feelings are normal. If you are a parent, you might be feeling these things as well.  My son went into middle school this year, and I had all the feels.

Sending our children off to school, whether kindergarten or high school, often brings a great deal of trepidation. We willingly send our children off into a space that we cannot control. Our hope is that they make good choices, good grades, and good friends.

As a parent, this is what you have prepared for. You have given your child everything that they need to be successful.

As a student, you are ready for this too. This new adventure will have lots of ups and downs and twists and turns. But it is in these moments of challenge that will bring you the memories. Every situation brings with it a new possibility, and it is up to you whether it be a negative or positive one.

Maybe you didn’t get a class you wanted, a teacher you wanted or the lunch you wanted. Maybe you broke up with your significant other over the summer, and you have all your classes with them. Maybe you are just coming into this new year hoping that whatever rumor was spread about you last year does not follow you into this new beginning.

All of these things may bring with them their fair share of stress. If you are a parent, you may be inclined to step in.  After all, it is hard, and sometimes heartbreaking to see our children struggle when we know that one phone call might be able to change everything.

I challenge you to resist making that one phone call. I know it’s hard, I’m a parent myself. But high school is a soft landing.

We are designed to provide a place for failures to be turned into successes.
We are built to help students with self-discovery and personal growth.

So as you begin this fresh, new year, look at every situation as a teachable moment,  not a problem to be solved.

When we approach situations with curiosity, we become open to new possibilities.

Welcome to the 2019/2020 academic year at Groves High School. It’s going to be a great one!
